Glimpse of Yesteryear
(originally quoted in the Members Handbook of 1983
- our 75th Anniversary Year)
Mr.
Rolt wrote to Mr. C. McAndrew asking him if it would be possible
to buy or rent a piece of ground at the rear of Elm House for
a new Bowling Green.
20th March 1925
It
was agreed that the Club should have a new mowing machine and
it should not be lent to anyone without the sanction of whole
Committee.
21st April 1927
The
accounts for 1927 include an item for "Lengthening and returfing
green" £31.17s.9p
October 1927
The
Accounts for the supper on 27th October 1928 indicate a total
expenditure of £24.10s.0d. including an item of "Service
(2 boys) for refreshments - 15/-d." Income from the sale
of 36 tickets at 3/6d each totalled £6.6s.0d. leaving a
deficit of £18.4s.0d which was met by an anonymous "Special
donation".
October 1928
The
Secretary was requested to ask the Trustees for permission to
cut 200 turves from the back of the Girls Tennis Court in order
to complete the new green.
9th April 1929
The
Hon. Secretary having reported the resignation of Mr. W. Bennet,
groundsman, it was it was resolved to appoint Mr. T. Smith, Council
Cottages, as groundsman at £1 per week for 20 hours labour.
23rd April 1936
The
Secretary was instructed to write and express the thanks of the
Club to F. W. Chamberlain and W. Baker for allowing members to
use their grounds for practise games while the green was unfit
for play.
14th June 1934
The
work of relaying the old green has now been completed except for
the sowing of grass seed
. Towards the cost of £216
members have promised loans amounting to £213.10s.
Annual Meeting, February 1934
The
Hon. Secretary reported that a contract amounting to £250
had been placed with Messrs. Nottle & Son to erect a new brick
built pavilion in front of the old pavilion which was then over
25 years old.
It was agreed that the opening of the Pavilion should be performed
by Mrs Chamberlain on 2nd May 1936.
4th February 1936
Mr.
J. W. Jones proposed that the annual subscriptions for playing
members shall be 2 guineas for the season
2nd October 1937
Mr.
J. W. Jones proposed that the West Wickham Bowling Club be registered
with the appropriate authority for the purpose of retailing alcoholic
liquor. (Carried by 30 votes for and 9 against)
2nd June 1939
It
was resolved that we place on record that our bowlers were successful
in winning the first Borough of Beckenham Triples Championship.
27th February 1943
The
Secretary reported how the 1944 Season had been interrupted by
the advent of Doodlebugs which necessitated cancelling fixtures
and other activities.
10th February 1945
Mr
Johnson stated that the question of Sunday play had been referred
to the Trustees who had duly given their permission.
9th November 1945
The
Secretary informed members of our successful application to the
Southern Counties Bowling Association
3rd January 1947
Club
subscriptions were raised to 3 guineas.
