West Wickham Bowling Club
May 2004 Newsletter

A new season dawns
Sorry for the delay in getting this Newsletter out but it's a long story which involves decorating a room, a carpet that didn't arrive and a very hectic Bank Holiday weekend which involved a trip to Cardiff. I will not bore you with all the details but suffice to say that it is probably just as well that the carpet fitter, a mad keen West Ham fan, did not turn up at a certain household to fit the carpet as the householder may just have been tempted to mention the result of a certain match that had been played a couple of days previous and the carpet may then have been laid with a two inch gap all round. Anyway that's enough of that. I would like to start by extending a warm welcome to you all to the new bowling season which, as usual, has got off to a very hectic start with numerous competitions already played, won and lost. After the dreadful start that we had, weather-wise, I am pleased to say things have settled down a bit and we are getting weather more akin to that which we should have during the summer months.

Welcome
I must first welcome some new (and some not so new) members to the club. Jeanette Whitehead, Chris Flook, Val Rose, Valerie Reynolds, Bob Govan, John Potts and Jennifer & Tony Willis have all joined as full playing members whilst Ernie Hay has rejoined after a spell away from us. We wish them all well.

LX League
The first three matches of the season brought a couple of very good results
Eltham Conservatives Away Lost 2 - 8
New Livesey Home Won 8 - 2
Eltham Home Won 7 - 3

Kent Competitions
Obviously things change very quickly with these competitions so apologies if those that are mentioned have
now been knocked out but Barbara Way, Eileen Pickering and Margaret Hewitt are still going in the triples whilst as far as the men are concerned Bob Govan and Phil Broomfield have reached the 4th Round of the pairs as have Mike Truan and Ian Way and Pete Searle, Bill Bennett & Keith Gall are still left in the triples. Lets hope for a continuation of their success.

Mixed Pairs Competition
The sets format seems to be either loved or loathed by you with opinions mixed and proves that there is just no pleasing some of you. We will listen to any suggestions you may have regarding the "round-robin" format of the competition. Anyway congratulations to Sam Bolt & Ida Bennee, Eileen Stalley & Bill Whiting, Annette Hughes & Keith Gall plus Irene Spiller & Ron Dalgliesh for getting through to the semi-fmals.

Club Web site
Thanks to Pete Searle and Malcolm Whitehead the club web-site is up and running. For those of you who can access the internet it can be found on www.westwickhambc.org.uk. It's early days yet and it needs a lot of work but I am sure that this will prove to be an invaluable way for us to keep people advised as to events at the club and to attract members in the future.

PCL League
The first games of the season have brought some good results.
Hayes Country Club Home Won 6 - 1
Blackheath & Greenwich Home Won 5 - 2
Nat West Bank Home Lost 2 - 5
HSBC Home Won 6 - 1
This already shows an improvement on last seasons results so keep it up lads.

North West Kent League
Our newly promoted team has only played one match so far in Division 5;
Hayes Country Club Away Lost 2 -4
Early days yet. Lets hope that Phil's selections can achieve a third promotion in a row.

Notice Boards
Members are reminded to watch out on both the main notice boards for match notices and points of interest as things are not just pinned up to make the place look pretty !!!

Congratulations
Somewhat belatedly we would like to pass on our heartiest congratulations to Reg & Renee Chamberlain who celebrated their 64th (yes sixty-fourth!!) wedding anniversary this month.

The Monday Club and other "Helpers"
Sadly the "Monday Club" is no more. Peter Jeffries has decided this season that he does not want to continue (thanks for all your efforts over the years Peter) and one or two others have sadly drifted away but Joe Rowe and Mike Wilson have agreed to come up a bit earlier on a Tuesday before the Aggregates and do some of the chores that need doing whilst one or two of the girls are making sure that their toilet is kept clean and tidy. Good on yer boys and girls - Has the "Tuesday Club" been born?
I must take this opportunity to thank Malcolm Whitehead who cleared the patio area of all the weeds that had grown over the winter months.

Captain Bob's Request
It has been brought to Bob's attention, by more than one person, that some of you are moving about behind the "head" when players are about to bowl which can be very off-putting. So please can everyone be careful and if necessary stop for a moment until the player has delivered their bowl. Thank you.

Outside Competitions
Not much joy I'm afraid in the outside competitions for the men or the ladies. The ladies went out of the Mollie Cleggett competition to the Holmesdale Club where, incidentally, a little bird tells me Angela Burroughs put up a "wrong bias"!!. The men lost, in the pouring rain, at home to Bromley in the EBA Double Rink Competition in the first week of the season, despite winning on one rink by 10 shots. They also lost to Nat West Bank in the L&SC Shield despite being 10 shots up across three of the four rinks. An early exit for the L&SC fours and pairs away at Tunbridge Wells and home to Old Colfes respectively whilst Phil Broomfield lost to Bromley Town in the Gold Badge. Roger Cooley also went out of the L&SC Lonsdale Competition at the first hurdle to Eltham Conservatives. In the EBA Champion of Champions Phil Broomfield recorded a nail biting 21-20 victory against one of our old members, Brian Vickers, in the first round and will now have a trip to Wrotham in the next round.

Get well soon
Sadly there are a good few of you who are not enjoying the best of health at present and rather than risk leaving someone out I had better not try and name all of you. However I must mention John Tullett whose season ended before it had even begun when his knee gave way and is now awaiting surgery on it (the lengths some people will go to avoid playing with me in the pairs! !).
The other is not a member but Sally Radford, the wife of our Captain, Bob, is suffering from a collapsed lung and has just been admitted to hospital. We wish you all well and hope that the bowlers among you are back to full health soon and able to get back out on the green.

In Memoriam
