West Wickham Bowling Club
June 2009 Newsletter

TONY JONES
I think most of you will now know that sadly Tony passed away on Monday the 8th June. Our thoughts and best wishes are with June and her family at this time.

MENS SECTION
Bowls England Men's National Top Club
A local derby to bring the crowds back. Having gone 1 down in the 2-wood, the pairs and triples then both won relatively comfortably. The Rink coming to the last end were 4 down but before the last Metropolitan Police wood was bowled we were holding 3 and a measure. Unfortunately their skip came in for 3rd wood so the overall score was now 2-2. This left the singles which had been a tight game throughout and was 19-19 before what proved to be the decisive end when we got 2 shots for the game. A great result against the PCL and Cox Cup Holders and we now play Bromley in the 3rd round. Well done to all who participated and John Muddle for marking. Unfortunately we lost last weekend to a strong Bromley squad 1-4 but were in the game for a long time.

Bowls England Men's National Club Two Fours
A tight game against a strong Sidcup 8 and although both rinks took useful leads during the early exchanges Sidcup ran out the winners winning on both rinks , mainly due to the fact that overall they had more woods consistently in the heads.

PCL League
In an all second Division clash we ran out easy winners against Eltham Conservatives (7-0) but against the holders Metropolitan Police (0-4) we were well beaten overall. Having said that 2 rinks looked like winning until literally the last end. Check notice board for latest PCL Newsletters.

LX League
We currently stand 8th in the league and beat Sidcup in the defense of the Ron Ault trophy.

North West Kent League
A good win against Royal Bank of Scotland (6-0) but the wheels came off against a strong Swanley side (0-6) who were relegated last year for John Potts's Division 2 men. Then followed a defeat to Bromley Town (1-6) and Orpington (0-6). Bill Bennett's Division 6 men had a good home win against West Beckenham 2 (6-0) and an even better away win against St Michaels Residents Association (6-0) followed by a home win against Coney Hall 2 (6-0) and another good away win against Swanley 2 (4-2).

LADIES SECTION
Molly Cleggett Memorial Trophy
A Preliminary Round defeat against Bellingham although the Home team won 23-12 the away team went down 11-27, a defeat by 34-39.

Belle Trophy
We had good wins in the singles and pairs but the triples and fours both lost and the combined shots total went against us against Hayes Common.

Jubilee League
A good away win against Forest Hill (4-2) followed by another away win against Bellingham (6-0) although we could only get 2 triples out instead of rinks. Finally another win against Muirhead (4-2) but triples again.

North West Kent League
Another win against recently relegated Kings (4-2) for Jeanette Whitehead's Division 4 side followed up with an excellent win away at Woolwich & Plumstead (6-0) and another home win against Holmesdale (6-0) and an away win at Knockholt (4-2)

KENT COMPETITIONS
The last remaining ladies unfortunately both went out in the 4th round. The triple of Margaret Hewitt, Barbara Way and Eileen Pickering lost to Pam Hodge's triple from South Hill Wood having held a good lead but getting stuck on 17. In the pairs Margaret Hewitt and Barbara Way lost to Stella Wright's pair from Hayes Common after going to an extra end and holding 3 before losing to the last wood on a measure which had to be decided by Andy Kemp of Woolwich & Plumstead acting as umpire !!!
Congratulations to Linda Brown who along with Pauline Palser (Muirhead) and Joyce Barnes (Royal Bank of Scotland) won Division 1 Section A final of the Kent Benevolent Two Wood Triples (is it the only Kent competition where you can play with people from different clubs?) this week beating a triple from her old club Muirhead. They play in the Divisional Final against a triple from Borough Green on the 28th June and the winners go to the Kent Finals at Woodlands Park on the 5th July.
The men's 4 of Tony Bartholomew, John Muddle, Norman Routledge and Ian Way got to the Divisional Semi Finals but lost to a strong Bellingham team playing on their own green. In the Unbadged Singles both Phil Broomfield and Tony Bartholomew have made the Divisional Semi Finals this Wednesday at Forest Hill - all support welcomed. Brian Ede unfortunately fell at the final hurdle.

MAYOR OF BROMLEY'S GAME
A lovely afternoon although we went down 112 - 131. The Deputy Mayor and Councillor Gordon Norrie stayed all afternoon and seemed to enjoy himself. Incidentally one of the Mayor's team skips David Crowe rolled his first wood as Mayor of Bromley and then took up the game playing for South Hill Wood.

AGGREGATES
Nice to see Maurice Bacon up at the roll up for the first time on the 2nd June. Also to see Brain Garlick and son Philip up watching after Brian's recent long spell in hospital - hopefully it will not be too long before he is playing again. May winners were 1st - Jenny Willis, Joint 2nd - Ann Potts and Irene Spiller.

PRESIDENTS DAY
Mike was blessed with excellent weather for the day and it was nice to see John and Sheila Page in attendance along with "old bowlers" Alan Clout, Reg Johns and George Coombs. An excellent meal, provided by Mike, and the day raised £310 for St Christopher's Hospice, including the spider won by Eileen Stalley. Well done to the catering and bar staff team's on the day.

CAPTAINS DAY
Again Nick had a lovely afternoon - except being on the highest losing rink !!! Weather excellent and nice to see friends from Cyphers (an all Wickham rink), Blackheath & Greenwich, Croydon, Bromley, Worthing Pavilion and New Addington. The spider, raffle and the corner to corner game organised by Mike Truan and Terry Fitzgerald after the meal raised £597 for St Christopher's Hospice. Spider won by Peter Searle and Norman Routledge won the corner to corner both times. His knowledge of crown green may have had something to do with it but having 3 woods instead of 2 on one end was more likely !!! Again full marks to the catering and bar staff teams but who ate Brian Smith's meal??

THE GROUNDS
Thanks to Colin Webb for keeping the flower beds tidy and colourful and also a big thank you again to Anne Simmonds for her excellent hanging baskets. We have also had a small shed donated by a friend of the editor which will be erected behind the clubhouse and used for storage.

WORKING PARTIES & CLEANING ROTA
The Working Parties will continue through the season on Tuesday mornings - all support welcome. The Cleaning team will now revert to a weekly clean, also every Tuesday morning. Please consider giving up a little of your time to assist in whatever way you can.
Remember if all this "voluntary" work was done by a contractor(s) your subs would rocket !!!!!
