WEST WICKHAM BOWLING CLUB

June 2004 Newsletter

Welcome
A very warm welcome to two more new members. Joan & Dave Keer joined our ranks at the beginning of the month as full playing members and we hope that they enjoy their time at the club.

LX League
Five more matches to report on during the month, which was not a good one for Harry's boys! :-
Bellingham Away Lost 2 - 8
Forest Hill Away Lost 0 - 10
Bromley Town Away Lost 2 - 8
Old Colfeians Home Lost 1 - 9
Sidcup Away Lost 2 - 8
In the Ron Ault Cup (knockout competition) we were very unlucky in that we won by 2 on one rink and lost by 2 shots on the other. We were then defeated on the extra end to a very good team from Eltham Conservatives

Kent Competitions
As we said last month these things change so quickly as they are being played every day of every week for about a month. Now, sadly, they are all over for another year. However we must start by saying that we should have mentioned that Brian Edwards was, at the time of writing the May Newsletter, still in the Two-Wood competition but then, by the time you had read it, he was out!
Commiserations to Barbara Way, Eileen Pickering and Margaret Hewitt who were knocked out of their Divisional Semi by HSBC on an extra end!!!.
Mike Truan & Ian Way were beaten by just 2 shots in the Semi- Final of the Pairs (held at West Wickham) but it was against a certain Mr Andrew Thomson, England International of the past 20 odd years, so it was a noble effort! Incidently Mike and Ian would like to thank each and every one of you for the magnificent support they received on the night - it does makes a big difference when you have the support of most of the crowd!
In the Bert Cox Cup we scraped a 1 shot victory at home but lost away at Orpington B.C. by 7 so went out of that competition.

Mixed Pairs
Following on from many criticisms and comments generally about the format of this competition it has been decided to canvass your views before the end of the season and a decision will be taken as to whether this will revert back to a straight knock-out competition arranged by pairs to suit themselves during the season or we try and re-jig the Bank Holiday Monday format to suit more people. This way you will all know at the time of entering how the competition is going to run. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !

Club Web-site
Copies of this and all future Newsletters will automatically be posted onto the club web-site and other information is being updated as we speak. Don't forget to check it out on www.westwickhambc.org.uk.
We are told that a picture of the best bowler in the county is on there and his initials are B.A. - any guesses?????

PCL League
The month of June is better off forgotten as far as these results are concerned but they were all away !.
Eltham Conservatives * Away Lost 2 - 5
Metropolitan Police (Hayes) Away Lost 0 - 7
Forest Hill Away Postponed / Cancelled ?
Old Colfeians Away Lost 1 - 6
* There is a story attached to this result that we would not be so cruel as to mention here but if you ask Paul Hendy nicely he might tell you !.

North West Kent League
The games are coming thick and fast now for our Division 5 team ;
South Hill Wood Away Won 4 - 2
New Livesey Home Won 4 - 2
Bromley Common Away Won 4 - 2
Met Police 1 Home Lost 2 - 4

As far as the Knock-Out competition turned out we were successful in our game against Orpington Excelsior 1 beating them overall by 33 shots to 31.

Captain's Day
Captain Bob's special day is now less than two weeks away and he has 7 specially invited rinks from various clubs / organisations coming to hopefully make it a day to remember. Proceeds from the day will be going to the St Thomas's Paediatric Cochlear Implant Society so please get your name down and support Bob.

Other Outside Competitions
L&SC's Competitions - Phil Broomfield went down to Wrotham in the 2nd Round of the Gold Badge and unfortunately lost 19-21. Ernie Hay, Bill Mewis & Roy Aston are still going strong in the triples but have to go all the way down to Southampton on the morning of Sunday 4th of July to play their 3rd Round match - good luck to them and hopefully after such a long trip they will come back triumphant!!!.
BBDBA Competitions - In the Singles Phil has yet to arrange his game against the champion from Petts Wood. Hot off the press comes the good news that our Triple of Peter Jeffries, Bob Radford and Phil Broomfield were successful against three from Muirheads, 21 - 6 (even though Phil did put up a wrong bias during the game!!!!). Our Four of Roger Cooley, Nick Pickering, Roy Aston and Ernie Hay were at Penge Conservatives on the same night but the result is not yet known. In the Pairs the defending champions, Les Melville and Ian Way, are at home to a pair from Nat West Bank on the 7th of July.
Belle Trophy - Not a good day for our ladies as they lost in all four disciplines to a team from Petts Wood.

Jubilee Cup
Sadly, after recent successes in the competition, our defending champions lost in the first round to Bromley Town on a rink that is best described as "one that gives you really good home advantage" !!!

Hot Shots
It does not happen all that often so it's got to be worth mentioning that Malcolm Whitehead and Jack Skinner scored a maximum 8 shots on an end during their club pairs game against Roy Aston & John Potts this month.

Animals League
Unfortunately the league is not running as smoothly as was hoped with a number of games being postponed but hopefully these will all get played off soon. The early front runners are the Antelopes with three other teams just one win behind.

An Interesting Fact
Without rushing out to look - I bet you cannot tell me what figure is on the weather vane on the roof of the clubhouse ? Well the answer is it's the figure of a bowler and I am reliably informed that it was made, by hand, by an old member by the name of Bob Squires. He evidently owned the builders merchants just off the roundabout opposite the White Hart P.H. and died in 1993.

Club Competitions
Do not forget that many members will be away on the Devon Tour between 24th to 31st of July so make sure you have played or at least arranged your club competitions to take this into account. Paul is trying to be strict with the closing dates!!!!!

Thanks
Anne Simmonds has, again, provided the beautiful baskets of flowers that are hanging up outside the clubhouse. They really brighten the place up and attract nice comments from all our visitors. So thanks Anne!.
