In
Memoriam
It is with much regret that I have to inform you that Betty Joab passed
away overnight on 29th/30th June after a short stay in the St Christopher's
Hospice. She will be sadly missed.
Welcome
June Jones has after a brief spell as a Social Member taken the plunge
and become a full member of the club.
Ladies
Charity Invitation Day
A very enjoyable day was had on the 8th and rinks of invited clubs supported
the chosen Charity of the day - the Breast Cancer Campaign. The day started
with the customary 'spider' which was won by our own Ida Bennee. Together
with £100 that was donated by our beer suppliers, Coors, the money
raised from the raffle afterwards resulted in a cheque for £400
being sent off to the charity. Well done everyone !
BB&DBA
Competitions
All of our entries are doing well at present. Les Melville and Ian Way
edged through the next round of their pairs competition on an extra end.
Having been 11-1 down at 8 ends of their match against Orpington B.C.
this constituted a fine comeback. Another home draw awaits them in the
next round.
In the triples Phil Broomfield, Keith Gall and John Tullett have won through
and play their next match against Orpington B.C. at home in the next week.
The fours team of Jack Skinner, Bob Radford, Tony Lee and Pete Searle
won a difficult match at Bromley Town and are away at Hayes C.C. in the
next round very soon.
NW
Kent League
June's results were excellent for the lads that play in the triples league
with all four of their Division 6 games being won. This puts the team
in second place in the league and in with a chance of promotion for the
second successive season. Keep it up chaps !! ;
Knockholt Home Won 6 - 0
Bellingham 2 Home Won 6 - 0
HSBC Away Won 4 - 2
Swanley Away Won 6 - 0
Incidently
the knockout competition has also started and our team beat Orpington
2 in the preliminary round.
LX
League
There were four matches during June with some mixed results as follows
:-
Bellingham Home Won 8 - 2
Forest Hill Home Won 6 - 4
Bromley Town Home Lost 2 - 8
Old Colfeians Away Drew 5 - 5
Kent
Competitions
Sadly all interest in these competitions ended within a few days of the
last Newsletter coming out but I am pleased to say that the club was very
much involved in the Divisional Finals as we hosted the Semi Finals and
Finals of the pairs and also three of the club's newly qualified markers,
Colin Fazackerley, Brian Edwards and Peter Childs marked games in the
singles, unbadged and two-wood competitions !!
At the time of writing the Cox Cup is being played and the result will
be in next months Newsletter.
Aggregates
As promised here are the result of the May competition ; 1st - Doris Lindley,
2nd Ted Eastop and 3rd Eileen Stalley. The June results will follow in
the next Newsletter.
Help / Thanks
As mentioned before there are plenty of little jobs that need doing in
and around the club. Remember, they do not get done by "The Fairies"as
if by magic!. If you can help out with anything it would be greatly appreciated.
Whilst writing we would like to thank the two "Fairies" who
gave the ladies toilets a thorough clean recently.
Ladies
Competitions
The Ladies lost their 2nd Round match in the Mollie Cleggett against Bellingham
on 7th but are still awaiting notification of their opponents in the Belle
Trophy who are either Cray Valley or Orpington Excelsior. Keep you eye
on the notice board for when this is arranged and give them your support
if you can.
Jubilee
Cup
After beating last years runners-up, Bromley Common, in the first round
our team will be playing at Petts Wood on the 2nd in the next round of
the competition.
President's
Day
Dennis Jeffries thoroughly enjoyed his 'Day' on the 14th and the 4 rinks
of men and 2 of ladies had a great afternoon. Three specially invited
guests, his wife Mary, Rose Melville and Reg Chamberlain attended the
meal afterwards and, at his request, the money raised on the day (£300)
goes to club funds.
PCL
League
The men had a much better June than May which might have something to
do with the fact that we have, at last, had some home fixtures !!.The
results were as follows :-
HSBC Away Won 6½ - ½
Eltham Conservatives Home Won 6 - 1
Sidcup Home Won 5 - 2
Forest Hill Home Won 6 - 1
Incidently the Sidcup game was a real cliff-hanger with the overall scores
level with just one bowl left to be played by Sam Bolt. Wily old campaigner
that he is he promptly rolled one of our short bowls over a couple of
times to make the two shots that were needed to win by one. (Oh no - another
story to add to his list!!!).
Mayor
of Bromley Team
The annual match against the Mayor's team was held on 20th and resulted
in a 94 - 131 defeat for West Wickham with both the men and ladies losing.
The Mayor herself could not make it but her Deputy, Councillor Charles
Joel, did and seemed to enjoy the experience. A letter received form him
says ; "Can I say how much I enjoyed the afternoon and my appreciation
to Paul (Hendy) who gave me an insight to the sport. One of these days
I hope to be able to participate in the sport but will certainly need
a lot of coaching beforehand !" Perhaps there may be a new member
in the offing !!!
Best
Wishes
Our thoughts are with Roy Walker who is currently undergoing more hospital
tests and to Rose Melville who is currently recovering in Farnborough
Hospital after a blood clot burst in her leg.
Worthing
Pavilion
A list is now up on the notice board for this fixture which will take
place on Sunday 3rd August. A coach has been booked and should be leaving
at about 10 a.m. with the idea being to arrive just before midday to allow
you a couple of hours to yourselves before being picked up again and taken
to the green. There will be a two course meal after and then the coach
should depart at around 7 p.m. which will mean we should all be back home
by about 9 p.m. The cost is to be £15.00 for players and £13.00
for non-players. Please put your names down as soon as possible as it
is expected that this fixture will prove to be very popular.
The
Warren Open
Congratulations to Roger Cooley who made it to the final of the singles
but lost, despite being all-square with his opponent, because of the number
of ends won after the time limit expired. Hard luck Roger - you will have
to play quicker next time !
