West Wickham Bowling Club
July 2005 Newsletter

Welcome
I am pleased to say, in the men's section. Maurice Bacon who has been a Social Member for a while has now decided he would like to do some bowling as well and Roy Pack who used to bowl some time ago has decided that he would like to be re-introduced to the game !. We wish them both well and hope they enjoy their time at WWBC.

LX League
The results sadly have not improved too much for the over 60's and last months matches went as follows :-
Bellingham Home Lost 4 - 6
Forest Hill Home Lost 2 - 8
Bromley Town Home Lost 2 - 8
Old Colfeains Away Lost 2 - 8
Sidcup Home Lost 4 - 6
Alan is still struggling to field teams so please put your names down if you can play !

Kent Competitions
Sadly although we had three entries in the Divisional Finals this year none of them progressed beyond the Semi-Final stage. Colin Fazackerley lost 21-17 at HSBC in the Singles whilst Bob Govan was beaten 21-13 in the Unbadged Singles at Bromley. Most disappointing was that Bob, Phil Broomfield and Ian Way were soundly beaten 22 - 8 despite having home advantage in the Triples.
Margaret Hewitt and Barbara Way were eventually beaten by a very strong pair at Nat West Bank and Angela Burroughs and Eileen Stalley were also defeated in the over 55's pairs.
This is usually where some idiot says "oh well there's always next year" - so I wont !!!

EBA Double Rink
After a splendid game over at Sidcup unfortunately we lost out by just 2 shots after the four skipped by Ian Way won by 15 but couldn't cover the defeat of Ernie Hay's four. However it was a good performance and perhaps just as important some good experience for some of those who had not bowled in the competition before !

Other EBA Competitions
The quartet of Margaret Hewitt, Anne Simmonds, Bob Govan & Phil Broomfield have now safely negotiated three rounds of the national mixed fours with Ian Way substituting for Bob in the last round while he went swanning off on holiday! They now play a team from Division 2 and we wish them well.

Belle Trophy
The ladies were given a great start in the match against Eltham when Eileen Pickering won her singles game by 21 shots to 5 but the pairs, triples and fours all lost unfortunately and the overall score went badly wrong ending up 66 - 92.

Mixed Pairs Competition
The list will be going up very shortly to play in this competition. Please put your name down and once the numbers are known the draw can be made and the format of the event, which will be held on Sunday 31st July, will be decided.

More Good News !
Due to the hard work of a few members we continue to make a good impression on our visitors and raise money for the club. The visit of Bowlswear Direct at the KCWBA Two Wood Benevolent Triples raised £58 in commission plus over £160 in green fees and snacks. A profit of £149 was made on the catering for the KCBA v Cambridgeshire match and the KCPast PresidentsBA match also generated a similar amount. Food laid on for the Triples Divisional Finals evenings also went down very well with all who attended and raised money for the club. To highlight this point when one of our members visited another club recently unsolicited "thank you's" were received in gratitude for the excellent food and hospitality they had enjoyed at the KCWBA Triples day and on both Divisional Finals evenings. So a big "Well Done" to all concerned!.

North West Kent League
Unfortunately the poor start to the campaign in the league continues and Phil's lads are finding life in Division 4 just a bit harder than was hoped although it has to be said that he has not been able to select his first choice teams at times because of other commitments. Anyway the results last month were :-
Bethlem 2 Home Lost 0 - 6
West Heath Away Lost 2 - 4
Pleasaunce Away Lost 2 - 4
Metropolitan Police 1 Away Lost 2 - 4
Woolwich & Plumstead Home Lost 2 - 4
No joy in the league knock-out either with one rink winning at home to Met Police 2 but the other one losing by more.

2006 Tour
Judy Huggins has provisionally booked Dauncey's Hotel at Weston Super Mare for a tour there next year and arranged all the fixtures for the week which is 22nd - 29th July but at present only 17 men players have expressed an interest in going. As the mens matches will be 6 rinks each day it is essential that at least 25 men go to allow for someone to have a day off if required. Please give this your support and either put your name on the list or speak to Judy or else it may have to be cancelled as we do not want to risk losing a deposit.

Security
As you will have obviously seen the security fence is up and will be great deterrent to would be thieves but we cannot stress more strongly that you should all remain extremely vigilant to keep your possessions safe whilst in the club or out on the green. For those that do not know there was a very unfortunate incident on the evening of the Divisional Finals of the Triples. One of the players went back to the changing room after the game to find that someone had walked into the club and stolen his jeans and bowls bag containing his car keys. The thief then promptly went around the car park until he found the car that the key worked and drove off in it !. Fortunately the person in question has since got his car back, undamaged, but we must all take every precaution possible to prevent this sort of incident occurring again.

PCL League
A mixed month of results but at least we have had the opportunity to play on our own green a bit more. The results were as follows ;
Eltham Conservatives Home Won 6 - 1
Metropolitan Police Away Lost 1 - 6
Forest Hill Home Won 7 - 0 (w/o)
Old Colfeians Home Lost 2 - 5

Jubilee League
The ladies have had slightly better results recently ;
Forest Hill Away Lost 2 - 4
Bellingham Away Lost 0 - 6
Muirhead Home Won 4 - 2

Animals League
The Animals league did start on the 13th of June but the second round of matches has been delayed by other competitions on the green but during July another 3 rounds will be played so I will be able to update you all on progress next month.

Aggregates
The May winners were as follows ;
1st Ann Potts, 2nd Jack Skinner & 3rd Peter Wakeford - well done to you all !
