Finals Day
We were very lucky with the weather on day and on the green we had the
following good & hard luck stories :-
Ladies
Championship - Barbara Way 21 - 8 Anne Simmonds
Handicap Singles - Margaret Hewitt 21 - 19 Barbara Way (played on Sunday
29th - Barbara's birthday !)
Handicap Pairs - Jo Reynolds & Barbara Way 23 - 11 Annette Hughes
& Jenny Mewis
Men
Championship - Ernie Hay 21 - 12 Ian Way
Handicap Singles - Ian Way 22 - 14 Phil Broomfield
Junior - Malcolm Whitehead 21 - 13 Colin Webb
Veterans Shield - Bill Bennett 21 - 10 Phil Broomfield
Two Wood - Bob Govan 15 - 9 Pat Moore
Handicap Pairs - Colin Webb & Ian Way 28 - 16 John Richardson &
Bob Radford
Mixed Pairs - Irene Spiller & Ron Dalgliesh
beat Bill Whiting & Eileen Stalley by 3 sets to 1.
Thanks must go to Colin Fazackerley getting the
programme done again - at very short notice!. The winners of the lucky
programme draw were Bill Blackhall (£20) and Bill Mewis (£10).
Thanks also to the Umpire for the day, Brian Edwards, and to all the markers
who gave up their time and finally to all the ladies who provided a smashing
tea to keep the weary competitors going.
LX League
Just one match to report on during the month which could not have been
closer :-
Queensmead Away Drew 5 - 5 (68 shots each)
PCL League
We only had the one game during the month which certainly didn't go the
way we were hoping :-
Britannic House Away Lost 2 - 5
Forest Hill (Away) fixture - postponed or cancelled
? Still watching this space!
In the 4-3-2-1 league knock-out we lost to Sidcup despite winning the
Triples and Fours (Well we were still recovering from the tour !).
North West Kent League
CHAMPIONS AGAIN !!
Incredibly we have won our third promotion in a row since entering the
competition and with a game to spare as well ! The results went as follows
:-
Bromley Common Home Won 6 - 0
Met Police 1 Away Won 6 - 0
HSBC Home Lost 1 - 5 ( Wot ?)
West Beckenham 2 Away Won 6 - 0
Well done to everyone who took part and good luck
in Division 4 next season. Just to let you know it has been decided to
apply to put another team in the competition but I must warn all of you
that want to join in the fun that there are five more clubs waiting to
join who are in front us so it might take some time!!
London & Southern Counties Triples
Ernie Hay, Bill Mewis & Roy Aston were desperately unlucky in their
Section Final at Southampton Sports Centre. They lost a bad tempered affair
by just one shot to a hotly disputed measure on the last end. As neither
side could separate the bowls and a second shot to us would have meant
an extra end an Umpire was called who was a member of the home club and
(surprise surprise) he gave the decision to his clubmates who, it has
to be said, were not the most sporting people our lads have met in their
travels. Well done chaps for getting so far and remember "what goes
around comes around" so lets hope we get the opportunity to turn
the tables on these "gentlemen" at some point in the not too
distant future.
BDBA Competitions
Congratulations to our Triple of Peter Jeffries, Bob Radford and Mike
Truan who won their semi-final against Bromley Town at Coney Hall by just
one shot, 22 - 21, despite having dropped a 7 during the game. We wish
them well in the final which will be played on the 19th of September at
West Beckenham B.C. so if you can get along to give them support I am
sure they would appreciate it !.
I don't believe it ! Les Melville and Ian Way lost their Pairs title with
a defeat by two shots to a pair from Muirheads. As this is only their
second defeat in 5 years (21 games) please do not be too hard on them!.
Not good news in the Fours either as Roger Cooley, Nick Pickering, Roy
Aston and Ernie Hay lost their quarter-final away against Queensmead.
In the Singles Phil Broomfield has got through to the semi-final having
been awarded a "walk-over" by John Woodley of Bellingham and
so now plays Ron Riley (Nat West Bank) on the neutral green of Coney Hall
on Thursday 2nd September.
British Legion
Dennis Burroughs again organised a smashing evening for second of the
two annual fixtures against the Hayes Branch. This time the weather was
kinder and the teams enjoyed a playing in a much better game than the
first one. The buffet afterwards was, once again, magnificent and it clearly
encouraged everyone to spend their money behind the bar and on the raffle.
Although we put out a stronger team this time it was not reflected in
the score which ended up WWBC 98 The Legion 107 meaning that over the
two matches the Legion won quite convincingly. However the overall winners
were once again the club and the Poppy Appeal as the money raised on the
night, £374, was split evenly between the two - thanks for your
support.
Animals League
This year was a bit of a struggle to say the least but, with a bit of
persuading, we managed to get all of the postponed matches played off
in time. Then on the afternoon of the final matches it looked as though
the weather would defeat us, however it cleared up nicely and it proved
to be a very enjoyable evening. Although first place had already been
decided the fight for second and third spots went right down to the very
last bowl on two rinks. The final placings were 1st - Jaguars, 2nd - Bears
and 3rd - Giraffes. The complete league table is up on the notice board
so you can see exactly where your team finished.
Thanks to Barbara, June, Eileen & Bernice for helping with the buffet
afterwards.
Aggregates
The July winners were 1st Jack Skinner, 2nd Roy Aston and joint 3rd Frank
Barrett & Malcolm Whitehead.
Well done to you all. Just a reminder that the final matches, end of season
supper and presentation of prizes will take place on Thursday the 16th
of September.
Thanks
Just to clarify the situation regarding the indoor maintenance of the
club I am told that there are a few members who now turn up about an hour
early on Tuesday afternoons, before the Aggregates start, to clean all
the inside of clubhouse with the exception of the ladies changing room.
So we are very grateful to Roy Aston, Mike Wilson, Dennis Seaman, Derek
Reed and Joe Rowe for their efforts.
Welcome
I must welcome three new playing members to the club. Malcolm Sanderson,
Alan Maguire and Jock Teasdale have all joined us in the last few weeks.
Even though the season if fast drawing to a close we hope you enjoy what
is left of it and your association with the club.
Hospital Amenities Fund Triples
Sad to say that Peter Pearce, Roy Aston and Sam Bolt came up against an
inspired Triple from Bellingham who in Sam's words were "walking
on water" in their semi-final which was played at Hayes C.C.
Help
Please look out for the lists that will be going up asking for help on
various projects in and around the club during the close season such as
"laying up the green" etc. and put your name up if you can !
