Happy New Year it's 2024

2023 - LEAMINGTON

Results will be updated regularly, good luck to all the Kent B.A. participants.

Men's Top Club - Saturday 26th August

As mid-afternoon rain cleared, the Men’s Top Club Final didn’t disappoint. In what was our second live streamed match of the day, Appleyard B.C. went head-to-head with Shanklin. Isaac Jenner secured a 15-8 win in the Two-Bowl Singles for Appleyard against John Marsh. Jack Berry hit back for Shanklin by beating Harry Goodwin 21-11 in the Four-Bowl Singles. Shanklin also claimed the Pairs while Appleyard secured the point in the Fours. With the Triples match last to finish, Appleyard leaped ahead in the final stages to secure a 22-13 victory and 3-2 win to claim the title. Appleyard B.C. became the second Kent club to win the Men’s Top Club, after Bromley B.C. in 2021.

Men's Singles

Then there were two… Lewis King (Appleyard BC, Kent B) faced Darren Allsopp (New Lount BC, Leicestershire A) on our live stream, which featured guest commentator and last year’s winner, Ed Morris. It was Lewis King who came out on top by securing his maiden Men’s Singles trophy with a 21-10 victory meaning the Men’s Singles are heading to Kent for the first time since 2016.

White Rose Trophy

Now it was time for the highly anticipated Final between Kent and Cambridgeshire, who shared the green for one last dance in the White Rose competition. Stakes were high and the spectators around the B green were treated to bowls of the highest level. It was a fierce but friendly atmosphere between the teams and the crowd certainly added to the spectacle. After 21 ends of competitive bowls, it was Kent who were victorious with a 46-41 win and were crowned back-to-back White Rose Trophy champions here at the Aviva National Finals.

Amy Rose Trophy

Victoria Park played host to a final which went down to the wire with the last bowl winning the contest. The game ebbed and flowed between both counties and Devon and Kent put on a show for those watching. Two teams with great history in this competition played out a final to remember but it was Kent who were crowed Amy Rose champions for a second year running with the last bowl of the game securing a nail biting 38-37 win.

2022 - LEAMINGTON  (See Winners League Table)

Walker Cup – Winners: Kent

Following being runners-up last year and in 2017, Kent made certain that it wouldn’t be the same story today as they beat Wiltshire in a brilliant final. Emily Ferguson, Jane Cogle, Paige Dennis and Sian Honnor came out on top for Kent against Wiltshire’s Chris Mitchell, Laura Laytham, Jo Hicks and Sue Cooke with a 23-10 win. A five on the penultimate end for Wiltshire’s Marcia Easton, Charlie Goodwin, Deanne Davis and Alison Fail helped them beat Leah Bamford, Jennifer Southby, Erika White and Amy Banes of Kent 19-17.

Men's Champion of Champions

Harry Goodwin won this title by beating Scott Walton of St Neats, Cambridgeshire 21-18.

White Rose Trophy – Kent (winners)

In the White Rose, the Lancashire and Warwickshire semi-final resulted in a win for Warwickshire by 42 points to 37, whilst the Kent Suffolk was a close-fought encounter with Kent nudging across the line 42-41. It was nip and tuck in the early stages of the final, before Kent began to dominate. The final score was 40-26. Many congratulations to Joseph Vandepeer, Josh Rowe, Harry Duffield, Issac Jenner, Jack Wimble Roberts, Nic Holley, Joe Sandford and Harry Goodwin.

Amy Rose Bowl – Kent (winners)

In the Amy Rose Bowl, Northamptonshire and Kent made it through to the Final with wins against Worcestershire and Leicestershire respectively. Kent got a fast start, racking up a 17 point lead a third of the way into the contest. Despite 7 shots being picked up by the two Northamptonshire fours in their respective 9th ends, Kent maintained their advantage with the match concluding with a score-line of 48 to 32. Huge congratulations to the Kent team comprising Lean Bamford, Rachel Banks, Emily Ferguson, Paige Dennis, Olivia Moulton, Imogen Jenner, Amy Cheeseman and Erika White.

Subject: Competition & Championship Formats

We should like to point out to anyone who is unsure about the new bowls formats, Bowls England have decided to adopt for National Competition and Championships, unfortunately, our KCBA singles pairs triples and fours are therefore affected. These new formats only apply to games that make up the National Competitions and Championships.

Our own Cox Cup competition is not part of the competitions and championships, this competition will remain as twenty-one ends.

We have been approached by some club officials and bowlers asking if local leagues have to change to the Bowls England Competition and Championships rules. We want to point out that local rules and formats apply to local leagues and club matches, the K.C.B.A. whilst abiding by Bowls England rules do not endorse the changes of format, and we do not wish to try and change formats played in local leagues and for club matches or competitions.

Rick Travers (Secretary KCBA)

April 2021

Welcome back to the County games although many will be in a different format for the National Championships.  See the Bowls England web site for the National Championship Playing Schedule and Formats or click on the link here from Division 1 Secretaries .

Shaun Jones has won the Men’s National Two-Wood Singles Championship, supported by the Friends of English Bowling.  The Ross-on-Wye BC bowler defeated Kent’s Tom Bishop, representing Bromley BC , in this afternoon’s final at Victoria Park, Royal Leamington Spa.

KENT DUO WIN MEN’S NATIONAL PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP      28th August, 2019

Kent’s Jason Haskins and Roger Kendrick have won the Men’s National Pairs Championship, sponsored by Bowling Abroad.

The VCD duo defeated Isle of Wight’s Darren Griffith and Jack Berry, from Shanklin BC 18-8 in this afternoon’s final at Victoria Park, Royal Leamington Spa.  It is Kent’s first success in the event since Colin Goldsmith and Gordon Charlton, representing Sandwich BC, secured the title in 2007.

Wiltshire’s Lucy Smith and Mike Titcombe have won the Bowls England National Mixed Pairs Competition, supported by the Friends of English Bowling.

The duo from Westlecot BC defeated   Kent’s Sara Trotter and Dave Mason  in the final this morning at Victoria Park, Royal Leamington Spa.

Smith and Titcombe never looked back after winning eight of the opening 10 ends to surge into a 13-3 lead, eventually securing the title 24-8.

AVERY CLINCHES MEN'S JUNIOR SINGLES TITLE

Kent’s Jason Avery has secured the Men’s Junior Singles Championship, supported by David Mitchell-Gears MBE.

The 24-year-old defeated Wiltshire’s Tom Newman 21-11 in this afternoon’s final at Victoria Park, Royal Leamington Spa.

Left-handed Avery becomes Kent’s first ever winner of the Men’s Junior Singles Championship since its introduction in 1974,

whereas Wiltshire’s sole success came via Graham Shadwell in 1999.

Unfortunately our ladies triple went out but only by 11-12 which, on the face of it, sounds a great game.

Congratulations to Pauline Palser, Anne Bailey  and Linda Brown in getting to Leamington !!!!

Back to local matters for a moment.  Yesterday at Bromley B.C. in the Cox Cup semi - final V.C.D. beat Appleyard on the last end; Canterbury conceded to Bromley on the 17th end. In the final Bromley lost to V.C.D.

VANDEPEER CLINCHES SUTTON WINSON TROPHY

Kent’s Joseph Vandepeer has won the Sutton Winson Trophy at a rain-drenched Victoria Park, Royal Leamington Spa.

The 17-year-old, from Canterbury BC, defeated Leicestershire’s Kat Bowman 7-0, 8-2 in this afternoon’s final.

Vandepeer reached the final with a tie-break win in the semi-final over Oxfordshire’s Joseph Justin, with Thringstone’s Bowman also requiring a tie-break to defeat Nottinghamshire’s Oliver Sloan in the last four.

On Saturday 3rd August the English National Championship at Leamington Spa kicked off a month long programme of national title events (see BowlsEngland.com).

The first events were the Inter-County John’s and Middleton Cup . The former the premier County ladies tournaments and the latter the equivalent for the men.   Kent men were making a third appearance in the final of the Middleton within the last four years.

West WIckham alacadoos Mr. and Mrs. Bailey, and Mr. and Mrs. Way were in attendance offering their full support to the Kent men’s team, as was your roving reporter Mike Flaherty.

The morning match semi finals were Kent versus Northumberland and Devon versus 2018 Champions Leicestershire (a repeat of last year’s final).   Kent got off to a cracking first 5 ends with two rinks 10-0 up. Kent steadily built upon their excellent start maintaining a solid 20 shot lead throughout the match. The sporty but well beaten Northumberland team conceded defeat in the 19th over.

This early finished allowed Ian Way to exercise his Wetherspoons phone application to order an early lunch for himself and Barbara, which featured the early bird steak offering and complimentary draught beers - (I don’t know what Ian had!).

In the other semi final Devon won 118 - 99 thereby securing their fourth consecutive appearance in the final.   So the 2019 final would be a repeat of the 2016 and 2017 finals, both won by Devon.

The Kent team knew they had to start well against their formidable opponents who are the “Barcelona” of the bowls World, full of national, international and commonwealth games representatives and title holders.

At 5 ends Devon were 12 shots up but with Kent challenging well and often losing an end to the final Devon bowl. At 10 ends Kent were ahead on 2 rinks, within a shot on 2 other rinks but with worrying gaps on the final two rinks - score Devon ahead 59-35.

At one point early in the third quarter Kent reduced the deficit to just 9 shots but by 15 ends Devon had built a 90-62 - effectively Kent’s fate was sealed, with Devon just having to manage their end game. Kent conceded at 19th end - Devon winning 120 shots to Kent’s 79.

Kent are a good side but Devon are an excellent side and will likely be the team to beat in the foreseeable future for any County looking to secure the Middleton Cup - but Leicestershire proved in 2018 that on your day it is possible.

The West WIckham Ladies triples of Pauline, Anne and Linda will be competing at this year’s National Championships starting on Sunday 11th August at 2:00 p.m.  W e wish them well.

P.S. Regular train services from Marylebone to Leamington (grab an advanced return for £9) with the green just a 10 minute walk from the station.

Hopefully Kent's representatives will beat our 2018 score of 2 runners up places overall.

May 2019

Sadly we have to report the death of Doug Bunting . I think I am correct in saying he was Bromley Common's Men's Champion in 6 decades, a feat recognised in the Bowls magazine last year. While he never played for a club in the PCL League many bowlers will be sorry to hear of the passing of Doug and t here are a lot of players who still bear the scars from a tough encounter with Doug.

Sadly, Tim Hodges never recovered from his injuries and he died on Saturday 11th May. I first met Tim when he played bowls for Old Colfeians, where he qualified for his county badge and was known for his little skip he did as he delivered his bowl. When Old Colfieans folded Tim moved to Metropolitan Police. Here he became their Hon Secretary and the club representative on the KCBA Div 1 Division Committee. When he arrived on the Div 1 Committee he volunteered to be the Steward for the KCBA singles competition. A post he carried out with diligence and enthusiasm. A large hole has appeared in his family where he had caring duties for his wife Val. I have no doubt Met Police will rally round. Our thoughts are with Tim’s family and friends.

Kent Bowler Equals record

The performance of Roger Kendrick, who plays for the Vickers, Crayford, Dartford (VCD) club, deserves a special mention. He has qualified for the national championships in five events – men’s singles, pairs, triples and fours, and mixed pairs.

He was particularly delighted to win the county’s blue riband singles title, after losing in the final twice – in 2001, when he was only 24, and again in 2015. He also won the Kent mixed pairs title with 16-year-old clubmate Olivia Moulton, but lost in the fours final.

Although he and Jason Haskins lost in the semi finals of the men’s pairs, and (when the duo were joined by Barry Stone) the triples, Roger’s VCD teams managed to make the frame for Leamington in both events – by winning the third-place play-offs.

Like other big counties, Kent are given the benefit of have a ‘C’ entry in the national championships, so the senior ICT engineer at a comprehensive school in Gravesend became one of the few men to qualify for all four premier events – singles, pairs, triples and fours – in the same season.

For the record, the legendary David Bryant did so twice from Somerset, while others to achieved that feat include the late Grahame Luker (Somerset), Grant Burgess (Worcestershire), Les Gillett (in his Oxfordshire days) and Derbyshire duo Ashley Clipston and Martyn Allsopp.

Roger, who lives in Gravesend, heaps praise on his partners John Coatham, Jason Haskins and Barry Stone, in the men’s events, and his highly promising young lead, Olivia Moulton, in the mixed pairs.

August 2018

Now finished except for the Top Club games in mid September. Congratulations to all those from Kent who qualified.

Unfortunately not a great deal of success with no men getting beyond the quarter finals although the "junior men" got to the final

of the White Rose losing to Northamptonshire. The Ladies however have had a losing semi-finalist and a losing finalist four's.
